Tracking: A Blueprint for Learning How -
Jack Kearney. Jack's book looks dated but still has lots of useful
information. It was my first "real" tracking textbook, setting
aside the Tom Brown guides. I still recommend it. |
| Tracker - Joel Hardin. Joel is a former
US Border Patrol agent and the best known of the mantracking instructors
in the US. Featured in many magazine and newspaper articles, Joel has
written less of a textbook than a memoir. Nevertheless, there is lots to
learn here. |

|
The SAS Guide to Tracking - Bob Carrs.
Excellent book although it has some extraneous topics. Written by a former
British Special Air Service operator.
|
| The Art of Tracking: The Origin of Science -
Louis Liebenberg. The tracking book that I most wish I'd bought but didn't.
I skimmed this in a bookstore back several years ago. I passed on it
because I thought I could pick it up on the next trip. Apparently out of
print, copies go for a pretty penny. Argh! What a great book! If you can
find it at a price you can afford, buy! Probably the most academic book to
date on the evolution of tracking.

The Science and Art of Tracking - Tom
Brown Jr. Tom Brown is a little too "New Age" for many, and he
has rubbed more than one search manager the wrong way. That being said, I
found this to be the most informative of his many biographical or
instructional books. Well worth the addition to your tracking library. |
| Tracking and the Art of Seeing - Paul
Rezendes. Animal tracking is in part how I found my entree into SAR.
IMHO, the application of tracking skills to animal work is an excellent
way to broaden your abilities and develop your capacity to interpret
environmental (weather, soil) changes on any track. |

|
Field Guide to Mammal Tracking in North America
- James Halfpenny. Probably the first truly systematic book I'd ever read
on tracking. Halfpenny is a respected biologist and animal tracker who has
a lot to share in terms of tracking information. |
| Tracking - Signs of Man, Signs of Hope - David
Diaz, V.L. McCann. Good read. Emphasizes military tracking. Useful
guidance on aging sign. Includes plans for systematic observation of sign
over time in controlled conditions. |
