Here are some things that may prove useful for the Venturing leaders who recently attended my land navigation workshop at Powderhorn 2005:

Suggested Books

I have a list of books on my "Recommended Reading" page for  both Scouters and SAR students. Click on "Land Navigation" to quickly find them.

Web Resources

The US Geological Survey is a one-stop shop for both map products and teaching materials. Paper maps can be ordered via the Web. It's not difficult to order maps. The teaching materials can be either downloaded & printed or ordered via the Web. Almost all of the teaching material is free from USGS. The USGS website is very attractive but is just as difficult to navigate as it was 10 years ago. They change links with maddening regularity. If all else fails, contact one of the USGS Earth Sciences Information Centers (ESICs) for specific instructions.

USGS, The "National Map Corps" and Your Scout Unit

The US Geological Survey presents a great volunteer opportunity as well as a means to encourage your unit to practice its map and GPS skills. The "National Map Corps" is a volunteer arm of the USGS in an effort to systematically update the data in the USGS national map data system. The tools include a USGS topo map, a GPS unit and access to the Internet. Scouts as young as Boy Scouts can participate under adult supervision. Preregistration is required, though. Learn more by reading their Volunteer Guide.

USGS & the Emergency Preparedness Merit Badge

Don't overlook the US Geological Survey and its resources for the Emergency Preparedness Merit Badge. USGS is the primary federal agency for research into natural hazards such as earthquakes and volcanoes. USGS has extensive information on these hazards as well as the emergency responses for them. Believe it or not, earthquakes are considered the #1 natural hazard in the state of Georgia.
