I'm forwarding this to Traildog from Maud Dillingham, the thru-hiker who did
the Appalachian Trail over a year's time with "Trudy the Traildog," a
miniature Schnauzer, and Maud's husband's Cesar Becerra. I'm sure that I
speak for everyone who read their trail journals in that we sympathize with
Maud & Cesar's loss.

June 22, 2003 VENICE, CALIF.

Beloved dog "Trudy the Trail Terrier" met her untimely end on Venice
Boulevard in Los Angeles, Calif. The feisty dark gray miniature Schnauzer
was struck by a car and killed instantly. We think she was about three and a
half years old, but are not sure because she was a stray when she found us
in Taylorsville, Georgia back in November 2000.

Trudy was a veteran of the Appalachian Trail, having hiked from Maine to
Georgia with her steadfast companions, Maud and Cesar, from July 2001 to
July 2002. During the trip, she filled multiple roles with gusto: scout,
spirit guide, cheerleader, heroine, clown…there are not enough words to
describe what she means to us. We are in shock. It just doesn’t seem
possible.

We know that there are many fans of Trudy out there and we just wanted to
let you know that although her life on this Earth is over, her memory will
live forever. Maud is editing the documentary about our hike and the first
version will be focused on Miss Trudy. I will also expand and rewrite her
trail journal into a book.

Trudy taught us so much about love, care, bravery and compassion. She was
always excited about life, fearless and intrepid, playful, sometimes ornery,
fiercely independent but also a total softee. Trudy just could not get
enough cuddling. She slept in our bed every night and we took her everywhere
with us—even to restaurants and the movies (hidden in her Furrari travel
bag.) She came into our lives when we were still reeling over the death of
Maud’s father and brought us so much joy. We don’t know what her story was
before she joined our adventure, but while she was with us we doted on her
and we know she felt very loved.

Trudy, we will miss your vast repertoire of Schnauzer snorts, grunts, barks,
howls, growls, yips and yaps. We will miss how you cried as if your heart
would break when we had to leave you behind to go places that did not allow
dogs. We will miss how you wanted to challenge every dog you met, no matter
how big it was, and how you had to be approached carefully and with respect.
We will miss how excited you got when we took you for your long walk every
day. We will miss your angel eyes and your long eyelashes, your soft hair
and your perfect little ears, your wagging stump, your frenzy over tennis
balls and squeaky toys, and your way of charming everyone who took the time
to get to know you. You blessed our lives with your presence. We will never
regret one minute we were privileged enough to spend with you. May you trot
along forever on that big beautiful trail in Heaven.
