Note: In this installment, Trudy, the Miniature Schnauzer, reports on her traverse of the AT in Connecticut in the autumn, 2001.

In Connecticut I became intimately acquainted with a critter that I have learned to hate: the tick. I'm on Revolution and wear a Preventic collar, but Momma was still pulling one or two ticks off me every day. Indian Summer hit while we were there and hung on until December. Of course, the ticks hung on, too! What is with this weather?

We took some time off for Thanksgiving and flew to Miami to see Daddy's family. It cost $75 each way for me to ride under the seat in my Furrari (pet carrier). For that price you would think I'd get my own oxygen mask in an emergency! But no. Doesn't seem fair somehow.

There haven't been many people, let alone dogs, on the trail lately. But I got to meet a West Highland Terrier at 10 Mile River. His name was Cody and we played on the rocks at the river's edge. I even jumped in the water, it was so hot. This was on December 1st!

Cody looked a lot like my cousin Dudley, a Cairn. She died last month from a shard of steak bone that lodged in her esophogus and ruptured it. Her momma (my momma's sister) was really glad I told her about www.petloss.com and the Rainbow Bridge. Rest in peace, Dudley.

We hiked part of the time with Brother John, Momma's brother. He really like
to play stick with me. Even though I went through obedience class, I never learned to come when Momma or Daddy calls me. But on the trail, they figured out that if they bend down to pick up a stick and yell, "Trudy! Git yer stick!" I will come running--from chasing something, playing with a dog, or anything! It's really important to be able to call your dog to you on the trail.

When it finally starts to feel like winter, I'll let you know how that goes.
